Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is prevalent in the perinatal period (prevalence rates ~7%), but remains commonly misdiagnosed or undiagnosed and therefore untreated in the perinatal period causing significant distress and impairing functioning during the transition to parenthood. It can also be frequently misdiagnosed as generalized anxiety, postpartum depression or—most concerningly—psychosis. Despite its high prevalence and impact on attachment, functioning, and parental confidence, perinatal OCD is still underrecognized, delaying access to appropriate, evidence-based treatment.
This advanced one day Perinatal OCD training is designed for clinicians who want a deeper understanding of Perinatal OCD. Participants may already understand the basics of OCD, but are likely not Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) trained and looking to hone skills related to appropriate assessment and recognition of Perinatal OCD. Participants will learn how intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and compulsions manifest specifically in pregnancy and postpartum, how to distinguish severity and risk of symptoms, and how to conduct evidence-based assessments that follow best-practice perinatal guidelines. The training provides guidance on differential diagnosis and safety assessment and introduces several evidence-based psychotherapies for treating OCD. It provides a broad overview of the rationale and techniques of exposure-based treatment giving clinicians the confidence to recognize when a referral to ERP-trained specialists is appropriate. This session will also focus on introducing other evidence-based treatment options for OCD, but will not cover medication management. Practical tools, scripts, and case examples will be incorporated throughout to ensure participants leave with the skillset to recognize and appropriately respond to OCD in real-world perinatal settings.
